GATE Ranks vs Marks Vs Scores
Candidates taking the GATE examination in 2026 should be aware that GATE marks, scores, and ranks vary from one another. The GATE marks are the candidates' marks out of a maximum 100. The GATE scores, on the other hand, are determined using a normalising method and are scaled out of 1000. Candidates are given a GATE rank depending on their scores (i.e after normalisation).
GATE Normalisation
GATE 2026 will be held in numerous sittings, thus there will be some uncertain components like the number of students present, level of difficulty, and weightage assigned to any particular topic. Consequently, normalising scores becomes necessary when these factors change the overall difficulty level of paper.
How is the GATE score Calculated?
Candidates can check the GATE score formula in the image below:

How are GATE scores Normalised?
The formula to normalise GATE marks is stated below:

GATE Counselling 2026
GATE 2026 counselling will be of two types - COAP Counselling and CCMT Counselling. Students must note that COAP Counselling is conducted for M.Tech admission to different IITs. Similarly, CCMT Counselling is conducted for M.Tech admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.

PSU Recruitment through GATE 2026
Based on GATE result 2026, over 50 PSUs, including IOCL, GAIL, BHEL, NTPC, and others, offer recruitment for various positions. Candidates must aim for a GATE rank below 200 for successful recruitment in any one of the PSUs. However, securing a good rank alone is not sufficient, as PSUs also conduct interviews and group discussions for final shortlisting. Excelling in these selection rounds is crucial to securing a position in leading PSUs like Power Grid, BHEL, NTPC, IOCL, HPCL, GAIL, and more.
M.Tech Admission through GATE Exam 2026
GATE exam is primarily conducted for admission to M.Tech program in various engineering colleges. Many private engineering institutes also accept GATE score for M.Tech admission 2026. After the GATE result 2026 is announced, counselling session will be conducted for candidates who qualify the exam. There are two types of GATE Counselling 2026 - COAP and CCMT. GATE COAP Counselling is conducted for admission to IITs, while GATE CCMT Counselling is conducted for admission to NITs. Institutes separately release the GATE opening and closing rank for finalising the admission merit list based on which students are granted admission.
