With a strength of 6030 students and 353 academic staff, Banaras Hindu University is one of the oldest technical universities in India located in Banaras (Varanasi). The institute was established as Banaras Engineering College in 1919 which changed its name to the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, in 1968. In 2012, it received the designation of Indian Institute of Technology. There are 16 departments, 3 interdisciplinary schools, and 1 social sciences section at IIT (BHU) Varanasi. The college is a part of the Banaras Hindu University campus.

IIT BHU is ranked 31st overall and 15th in the engineering category in the NIRF rating for 2023. According to QS World University Ranking 2023, the university is positioned between positions 651 and 700. The institute has also been ranked 301-350 by QS Asia Ranking 2022.

IIT BHU offers 64 courses across Engineering, Science, Pharmacy & Humanities. The institute's BTech programme is its flagship course. Admission to the programme requires a JoSAA rank between 594-14537. MTech is the second most prestigious programme of IIT BHU. Candidates are required to score between 500-700 in the GATE exam for admission to the M.Tech program.

The training and placement cell (TPC) at IIT BHU organizes pre-placement talks, interviews, and group discussions (GD) every year to assist students in passing their placement interviews and finding the best job with the maximum remuneration. Companies like Flipkart APM, Google, Mercedes, Intel, Barclays, Bajaj, and others hire candidates who participate in the IIT BHU hiring process. The typical compensation package offered to a student throughout the placement process ranges from INR 10 to 30 LPA. Additionally, the top package may reach INR 70 LPA. The top domestic CTC and the highest overseas CTC in phase 1 of 2021 placements, respectively, were INR 2.05 CPA. 1185 offers were made by 332 organizations overall, including the 35 new recruiters.

Around 25% of undergrads at IIT BHU are given merit-based scholarship money every year. Along with this, the institution also offers additional forms of financial aid to SC/ST students, including small grants, refunds for meal expenses, and institute-free studentships. All non-sponsored students accepted into M.Tech./M.Pharm. programmes get financial aid in the amount of junior research fellowships. A number of Junior/Senior Research Fellowships are offered to PhD candidates.

IIT BHU Admission

IIT BHU admission is done on the basis of entrance examination. The institute accepts national level examinations for its B.Tech, B.Arch & M.Tech programs. Candidates seeking admission to their preferred program must appear for the entrance examination mandatory for that particular course. The detailed admission process for each program is given below:

IIT BHU B.Tech/B.Arch Admission

• Candidates seeking admission to the B.Tech & B.Arch program at IIT BHU are required to take the JEE entrance examination. Candidates must have a valid JEE Advanced score. Candidates having NATA score are also eligible to apply for the B.Arch program from IIT BHU.
• Candidates having a valid score of accepted entrance examination are required to participate in the JoSAA counselling process.
• Counselling Process involves choice filling of colleges where they must fill IIT BHU as their preference.
• Candidates will be allotted seats if they qualify the institute’s merit list
• If shortlisted, submit the fees and confirm the admission.

IIT BHU M.Tech Admission

• Appear for the GATE examination and obtain a valid score for admission to the M.Tech program.
• Register for COAP counselling Process
• Fill College Choices
• Candidates will be allotted the college based on their marks obtained by them in GATE examination.
• Once shortlisted, pay the fees and confirm the admission.

IIT BHU M.Sc Admission

• Candidates seeking admission to the M.Sc program at IIT BHU must appear for the IIT JAM examination
• Obtain a valid score and clear the cutoff
• Participate in the JAM counselling process
• Fill in the college choices
• Then, IIT BHU will release the final merit list.
• If selected, pay the fees and confirm the admission

IIT BHU PhD Admission

• Appear for UGC-NET JRF/CSIR NET/GPAT/GATE/DBT JRF and obtain a valid score
• Fill out the PhD application form available at the institute’s website with all necessary academic and personal details
• Candidates can also appear for the entrance test conducted by the college if they do have a valid score of any relevant national-level entrance examination.
• Based on marks obtained by the candidates in any of the accepted entrance examinations, the institute will release the merit list.
• The selected candidates will be called for the PI round.
• Following the PI round, the final merit list will be released
• Shortlisted candidates can then submit the fees and confirm their admission

IIT BHU Scholarships

To encourage uninterrupted learning among students enrolled in IIT BHU, the institution provides a number of scholarships for distinguished and needy students, as well as students belonging to the SC/ST category. The following are some of the most popular scholarships offered at the institute.

Merit-Cum-Means Scholarship: Only 25% of students enrolled to UG and PG studies at IIT BHU are eligible for MCM scholarship. To be eligible for the Merit Cum Means Scholarship, a student must have received at least 60% in the 12th grade and have an annual family income of less than INR 5 lakhs. As a scholarship award, the whole tuition fee is excused from payment.

National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST Students: NFSHE are specifically allocated to students from Scheduled Tribes who are pursuing higher education in the conventional and full-time mode, such as M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees in Science, Arts & Social Sciences, and Engineering & Technology.
