Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research Pondicherry, also known as JIPMER Pondicherry, was established in 1823 by the then French East India Company. The institution was named after the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964. It is directly managed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with autonomy to manage its own internal operations. The institute is ranked #5 in the medical category and #39 in the overall category by NIRF Ranking 2024. JIPMER Pondicherry has replaced King George's Medical University, which was ranked #5 by Outlook India in 2019. The institute was granted the status of INI by an act of parliament in 2008.
More than 100 courses in medical, paramedical, and research are available to students at JIPMER Pondicherry. Further, paramedical courses are offered at UG, PG, and diploma level. JIPMER Pondicherry admission to MBBS, MD/MS/MDS, DM/MCh is done on the basis of NEET-UG, INI-CET, and INI-SS exams, respectively. JIPMER seat intake for the MBBS program at the Pondicherry campus is 182, while it is 61 for the Karaikal campus. There are 250 seats available for the MD/MS program in total, and 65 seats, including 11 sponsored seats, are available for the DM/MCh program. JIPMER Pondicherry has 94 & 31 seats available for admission to its B.Sc. & M.Sc. Nursing programs, respectively. Additionally, 19 seats are available in the Post-Basic Diploma (Nursing) program.
JIPMER Pondicherry fee structure is highly subsidized and does not go beyond INR 15000/year for any program. In addition, the institution provides ST applicants with scholarships through the National Scholarship Portal. Every year, the institute holds a campus recruitment drive for students in the final year. Out of all students that took part in the placement 2021, more than 96% were placed. JIPMER Pondicherry Location
Situated at the Campus Road, Gorimedu in Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, the institute is often admired for being located in a beautiful city. Pondicherry airport is the nearest airport and it takes about 15-20 minutes to reach the campus as the distance is merely 5.6 km. Similarly, the nearest railway station is the Puducherry Railway Station, located 6.6 km away from the campus, taking students approximately 15 minutes to reach their desired destination. Students can also opt for bus services as Jayanthi Bus Depot is just 2km from the campus.

JIPMER Pondicherry Admissions
JIPMER Admission 2025 is merely based on the candidate’s prior academic performance along with a valid NEET score or scores of other relevant tests in the field of medicine, like INI-CET, and INI-SS exams, respectively. After students appear for these tests, shortlisted candidates are called for a counselling process.
JIPMER Pondicherry UG Admissions
M.B.B.S, B.Sc and BASLP are the main JIPMER courses that are offered at the UG level. For admission in these programmes, one has to:
MBBS-
- Apply and appear for NEET UG which is conducted by the National Testing Agency run by the Government of India.
- If the interested candidates meet the JIPMER cut-off after the results are announced, they will be called for a counseling process.
- Once their seat allocation has been done, the selected candidates will be called for document verification.
- The last step would be to pay the fee for the preferred course.
B.Sc and BASLP-
- Fill the application form and appear for the common entrance exam which is conducted by the institute itself.
- Interested candidates have to secure a minimum 50 percentile in order to crack the entrance exam.
- A merit list will be prepared for the selected candidates.
- Shortlisted candidates will undergo a counseling process and fill-in their preferences, seats will be allocated accordingly.
- The last step would be to pay the fee for the preferred course.
JIPMER Pondicherry PG Admissions
Courses like M.Sc, M.P.H, P.B.D, P.G.D, P.G.F, M.D, M.S, D.M, M.Ch and MDS are offered in the institute at PG level. For admission in MD/MS/D.M/M.Ch., candidates will have to appear for INI CET. For the remaining courses, students will have to sit for an independent entrance examination conducted by the institute.

- Interested candidates will have to appear for INI CET conducted by AIIMS Delhi.
- A merit list will be released shortly after that.
- After the cut-off requirement, shortlisted candidates will be called for the counseling process where they will be allocated a seat.

- Interested candidates will have to register themselves and fill the JIPMER Puducherry application form.
- Next, registered candidates will appear for a computer based entrance exam.
- Candidates having secured 50 percentile will be a part of the merit list that would be released
- These candidates will have to further participate in the counseling process
- Once the candidate is selected, they will have to verify their documents and pay the required admission fee.
JIPMER Admission P.hD
- Candidates should have qualified any one of the following: Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF/UGC-JRF/ICMR-JRF/ICMR-SRF/DBT-JRF/DBT-SRF/Inspire Fellowship/UGC SRF/CSIR-JRF/CSIR-SRF/DST-JRF/DST-SRF.
- Eligible candidates must fill the application form.
- Shortlisted candidates will appear for an examination conducted by the Ph.D Admission Committee.
- Selected candidates must complete the process by paying the required fee and verifying their documents.
JIPMER Pondicherry Facilities
The institute's 195-acre campus is home to more than 30 departments and various research centers. It also has 8 boy's hostels, and 4 girl's hostels with a total capacity of around 1700 students. The institute also offers facilities such as library, cafeteria, sports complex, gym, medical facilities, and auditorium to more than 700 resident physicians, 800 nursing & administrative staff, and 300 faculty members.
Library- The central library was established in 1957 and since then, it has been catering to various students and faculty members. The working hours of the Central Library is on a 24 x 7 hour basis all-round the year, which makes it easier for students to refer to books or other study material whenever they wish to.
Hostel- The institution provides residential accommodation for students and ensures a comfortable stay at the campus. The rooms are fully furnished and have essential requirements like water, food, and equipped furniture. The secure and safe blocks come with the option of single rooms, and double sharing rooms.
Sports- Various sports events are conducted within the university and students are encouraged to participate in them. Many students are also taken for external events that revolve around sports.
Cafeteria- The cafeteria meets the food requirements of students and the faulty members by providing them all three meals that include breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Hospital Services- Various medical services and assistance in different departments ranging from cardiology, pharmacology, dermatology etc are provided during the OPD timings.
Overall, the institute has modern IT and appreciable infrastructure and fully wifi equipped facilities that help the students to access the internet at any place on the campus.
