NIT Calicut: Admission, Fees, Ranking, Courses, Placement

National Institute of Technology Calicut was established in 1961 as Regional Engineering College Calicut in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, India. It got its present name in 2002 along with the university status. The institute is also recognized as an Institution of National Importance by the government of India. NIRF Ranking 2023 has ranked NIT Calicut at #23 in the engineering category and #2 in the architecture category. In 2021, the institute was ranked #19 by The Week Top Engineering College Ranking. 

With 3 schools and 12 departments functioning on its campus, NIT Calicut offers programs at UG, PG, and doctoral levels. The institute offers B.Tech & B.Arch programs at UG level; M.Tech, M.Sc, M.Plan & MBA at PG level and PhD at doctorate level. NIT Calicut B.Tech & B.Arch admission is offered on the basis of JEE Main scores followed by the JoSAA counselling. The M.Tech/M.Plan admission at NIT Calicut is done on the basis of GATE scores. Additionally, for admission to the M.Sc. and MBA programs, the institute takes the IIT-JAM and CAT scores, respectively. For its flagship B.Tech program, the institute has an intake of 1185 seats and separate 59 seats for B.Arch program. The fees at NIT Calicut for the B.Tech course is approximately INR 1.5 lakh/year. The institute also offers scholarship programs to its students namely, Merit-cum-means scholarship, Central Sector Top Class Scholarship Scheme for SC/ST students, and financial aid through E-grantz.

NIT Calicut Location

Situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats, the institute is located nearly 22 kilometers North East of Calicut city in the Indian state of Kerala. The campus is well-connected to the city and covers an area of approximately 120 hectares. To reach the campus from the Calicut railway station, it is advisable to go to the “Palayam” bus stand, there one can find private buses running every 5 minutes from 6 AM to 9 PM to Mukkam via Kunnamangalam and NIT Calicut. Get down at the NIT bus stop, it should take 40 to 45 minutes of travel time. 

NIT Calicut Courses 

As this is a reputed institute in the field of technology, its flagship courses include B.tech and B.Arch. The seat intake for these courses are 1185 seats for B.Tech and separate 59 seats for its well-established B.Arch program.

NIT Calicut Admissions

The seat intake varies for different streams. For instance, the seat intake for CSE is 179, while for Mechanical it's 207. Some streams have less than 50 seat intake, those include Biotechnology Engineering and Engineering Physics, both of them having merely 37 seats. The lowest seat intake is of Materials Science and Engineering, which is just 30. Admission applications are received by the institution from all over the country from various candidates. Through these applications, the admission process for UG and PG is conducted. 

NIT Calicut UG Admission

The institution offers two main flagship courses at the UG level, namely B.Tech and B.Arch. These courses are well-established and students aiming for engineering or architecture apply for these programs. Here are the requirements to be an eligible candidate:

• Should have completed 10+2 education 
• A valid JEE Main score; JEE main for B.Tech and JEE main paper 2 for B.Arch

• Based on performance in CAT examination
• 60% marks in graduation is mandatory

NIT Calicut M.Sc Admission

• Candidates must register themselves for Joint Entrance Test (JAM)
• Qualify JAM
• Selection will be based on a valid JAM score through a centralized counseling process - CCMN.

NIT Calicut MCA Admission

• Candidates need to appear for  All India NIT M.C.A Common Entrance Test (NIMCET)
• Selected candidates must choose NIT Calicut as their preference during the counseling process

NIT Calicut Placements

NIT Calicut has an active placement cell that is responsible for conducting placement drives every year. The median salary which was offered to the students after their 4-year graduation was INR 9,10,000. Whereas, for the 5-year course, the median salary was INR 3,50,000. For the PG programmes, the median salary was INR 8,25,000. 

The highest CTC during the placement drive in 2023 was INR 47 LPA, while the average CTC was INR 22.03 LPA for Computer Science & Engineering. Around 1138 students in all have been placed in the placement drive. The recruitment drive included more than 200 recruiters.

NIT Calicut Facilities 

The 300-acre NIT campus in Calicut is covered in lush greenery and has all the major and minor student support amenities. 

Hostels- With a total capacity of more than 4500 students, the campus comprises 13 boys' hostels and 4 girls' hostels. A modest canteen is also located on the hostel premises. Indoor sports facilities and guest room requirements are also provided. 

Sports- In addition, there is a gymnasium, swimming pool, auditorium, and a fully equipped gym for all the students. The institution focuses on both indoor and outdoor sports needs. 

Library- The campus has a central library to fuel the academic and research needs of the students. It has a vast and diverse collection of e-books, online journals, print journals, subscription to many magazines and newspapers. With more than 100,000 volumes, 200 printed journals, and 17,000 electronic articles is also available.

Additionally, it also provides a digital library.

In conclusion, the institution runs research and development activities in the nanotechnology department and has a supercomputer for that purpose. It has modernized infrastructure and focuses on the overall development of the students.
