GATE Eligibility Criteria 2025: IISc Bangalore has released the eligibility criteria for the GATE 2024 exam on its official website. Candidates wishing to appear for the examination this year must fulfil the eligibility requirements as set by IIT Roorkee. The GATE 2024 eligibility criteria are a list of conditions that candidates must meet, failing which they will be debarred from the examination process. The eligibility requirements consist of the qualifying examination and other academic qualifications.
The basic eligibility criteria to apply for the GATE exam is that the candidate must have a graduation degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ Science/ Commerce/ Arts. Students who have BDS & M.Pharma degree are also eligible to apply for GATE 2024. Aspirants currently in the 3rd year of their undergraduate degree can apply for the exam. Candidates from Commerce & Arts backgrounds can only apply for two subjects: Humanities & Social Sciences and Environmental Sciences & Engineering.

The GATE 2024 is conducted by 7 IITs and IISc Bangalore on a rotational basis. The examination is conducted for admission to M.E/M.Tech and PhD programs at different engineering colleges of India. Additionally, GATE scores are also used for getting a job in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

Changes in GATE Eligibility Criteria 2025
IIT Roorkee has brought certain changes to the eligibility criteria which candidates must be aware of. Interested aspirants can check the changes listed below:
- According to the latest eligibility criteria released by IIT Roorkee for the GATE 2025 exam, candidates having 3-year graduation instead of 4-year graduation are also eligible for the exam.
- The two new subjects have been added by IIT Roorkee for which aspirants from Commerce & Arts backgrounds are also allowed to apply. These subjects are - Humanities & Social Sciences and Environmental Sciences & Engineering
- From the given combination of papers, students can select two sets.
GATE Eligibility 2025 Verification Documents
While filling out the GATE application form, candidates must submit the following documents as proof.
- If a candidate has passed the qualifying examination and has received a degree, he/she has to upload the certificate issued by the university/institute.
- If a candidate is in the final year of the degree and has not received a degree, he/she has to submit a provisional scorecard/marksheet or certificate issued by the head of the department.

Note: There are a total of seven Professional Societies/Institutions which conduct different examinations for admission to engineering programs at the postgraduate level. Candidates who will qualify such examinations are also eligible for admission to the M.Tech program through GATE. These seven institutes are:
- The Institution of Engineers (India) (IE)
- The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
- The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)
- The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI)
- The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, including the Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChemE)
- The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)
- The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIIE)
However, candidates who have earned certification from a professional society must make sure that the exams they took were recognised as being equivalent to B.E., B.Tech., B.Arch., B.Planning, etc. by the MoE, AICTE, UGC, and UPSC.
GATE Eligibility Criteria for Foreign Nationals
The following are the eligibility criteria for foreign nationals who wish to apply for the GATE 2023 exam:
Nationality
Students from Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Singapore, Nepal, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Sri Lanka are also eligible to take the GATE exam. An examination can be taken in the respective countries of students who are nationals of the foreign nations stated above.
Academic Qualification
- Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree or in the last year of a degree in engineering and technology.
- It is also open to candidates who have completed a postgraduate degree or are in the last year of a science stream subject.
Age Criteria
There is no age criteria for foreign national candidates as well to apply for the GATE exam.
M.Tech Admission Through GATE
If a candidate is seeking admission to the M.Tech program in top engineering institutes of India, then he/she has to fulfil certain eligibility requirements:
- Aspirants need to pass the GATE exam in order to take admission to the M.Tech program in one of the IITs, NITs, IIITs & CFTIs.
- After clearing the examination, students are required to fill out the separate application form released by various top engineering institutes.
- Selected candidates, then, will have to participate in the GATE COAP Counselling.
- The final seat allotment will be done following the counselling round.
