IIT Patna: Placements, Admission, Cutoffs, Courses & Fees

The Indian Institute of Technology Patna is a public research institute based in Patna, Bihar. The IIT Patna was established on August 6, 2008. As per NIRF Rankings 2024, IIT Patna is ranked #34 in engineering courses. IIT Patna offers a comprehensible curriculum through 40 courses taught in undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. 

Among other courses, B.Tech. is the most popular course offered at IIT Patna. Currently 11 B.Tech. programs are available for entry-level admission through JoSSA. IIT Patna B.Tech admission mandates a Higher Secondary Certificate degree (10+2) with at least 75% marks. Then seats will be allocated based on the JEE Advanced score followed by a separate counselling process through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSSA). A total of 1476 students (1107 males and 369 females) were admitted by IIT Patna for the academic year 2021-2022 in UG programs. 

The tuition fee for admission to B.Tech. courses are INR 1,00,000 per semester for Open/OBC/EWS candidates. Whereas, SC/ST/PH candidates are exempted from tuition fees. Candidates whose family income is below 1 Lakh shall also get full remission of the tuition fees. Candidates whose family income is between 1 Lakh and 5 Lakh shall get a 2/3rd remission of the tuition fees. 

Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is the most competitive course here. IIT Patna CSE 2024 opening and closing rank for gender-neutral open category in round 5 as per JoSSA is 1760 and 3144. 

The first phase of IIT Patna’s 2024 placement starts with more than 200 job offers to over 500 candidates. So far, 58 pre-placement offers (PPOs) based on offers made by more than 700+ global companies have been made among the 700+ students registered for the course. The average annual package was ₹25 lakh. Google (13 offers) leads in the top recruiter, followed by Microsoft (9), Accenture Japan and Samsung (6 each) each, with roles in software engineering, data science, business analytics, consulting, finance, infrastructure, and R&D.

IIT Patna offers four-year undergraduate programs in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, etc. Applicants will require a JEE Advanced score followed by JoSSA counselling. The upcoming tentative dates for JEE Advanced are mentioned below: 

To take the JEE Advanced exam, you must rank among the top 2,50,000 scorers on the B.E./B.Tech. paper of the JEE Main exam, regardless of your category. The top 2,50,000 candidates from each category will be chosen based on their performance on the B.E./B.Tech. paper. Seats will be assigned to candidates from various categories based on the following percentages: 10% for GEN-EWS, 27% for OBC-NCL, 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, and 40.5% OPEN. Within each category, 5% of seats are reserved for PWD candidates.

IIT Patna Integrated B.Tech. and MBA Admission 2025

IIT Patna offers an integrated B.Tech. and MBA Dual Degree by partnering with institutes like IIT and NITIE. Students can join this course after completing 7 semesters or after 8 semesters. The course is offered in specialisations like Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, Financial Reporting & Analysis, etc. 

IIT Patna M.Tech Admission 2025

IIT Patna offers a two-year master’s degree (both regular and full-time) in  Electrical Engineering, Chemical and Bio-Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, etc. Candidates need to qualify for the GATE exam for admission in any of these courses. Registration  and exam for the upcoming GATE 2025 has already concluded.

IIT Patna M.Sc Admission 2025

IIT Patna offers a two-year master's program in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Then candidates will be selected based on the IIT JAM score. Registration for IIT JAM has already started for the upcoming year.

IIT Patna Ph.D. Admission 2025

IIT Patna offers a doctoral degree in both part-time and full-time modes. GATE score is mandatory for admission in these courses, except for candidates having a CGPA>=8.0 in the bachelor’s degree (M.E./M.Tech./M.Phil./equivalent degree), are waived from having a mandatory GATE score. 

Candidates receiving fellowships from any government-funded agencies like CSIR/UGC/DST-NET/NBHM exams can also apply for the doctoral program.
