TOEFL Registration 2023: To register for the TOEFL exam, interested candidates should acquaint themselves with the application process. As the exam offers year-round availability, students often seek guidance on when and how to register successfully. To begin, applicants must create a valid profile on the official website of the Educational Testing Services (ETS), the organization responsible for administering the TOEFL exam. The test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  is one of the most widely used English Proficiency tests. Over 11,500 colleges and institutions worldwide accept the test score and consider it as an admission criterion. Hence, every year, the TOEFL is given by various students and working professionals who are planning to study or work abroad. As ETS offers many tests including GRE, applicants will be asked to choose the desired test option when they proceed to register. They must select TOEFL as the preferred test and then select the “create account” option. Those already having registered for the same can directly sign in. For instance, if one had already made a profile on ETS for the GRE exam, they can use the exact login details for the TOEFL exam slot booking process.

TOEFL Registration 2023

There are two test types for the TOEFL exam: TOEFL IBT and TOEFL Essentials. Both tests serve the similar purpose of being English proficiency tests but have different exam patterns. Students can submit the score of both tests when applying for admission or an opportunity abroad. The registration for these is also done differently. TOEFL IBT: Registration Process

To successfully register for the TOEFL IBT test, students must follow the following steps-

Step 1: Make an ETS account

Step 2: Select TOEFL as the preferred test

Step 3: Select the “Register/Find Test Centers and Dates” option on the TOEFL website

Step 4: Students must choose TOEFL IBT when asked to select between IBT and Essentials

Step 5: Furthermore, choose between- 

• TOEFL IBT At Test Center
• TOEFL IBT Home Edition
• TOEFL IBT Paper Edition

Step 6: If chosen to give the test at a test centre, candidates must select a location and test date.

For the home edition, students must first verify their email address and then select a 2-month exam period. After confirming the time zone, they can proceed to select an exam date and time

For the paper edition, students would be required to make two appointments- one at a test centre for the reading, listening ad writing tests that would be attempted on a paper. A separate appointment should be booked for the speaking test which would be taken at home.

Step 7: Review the information in the acknowledgement section and confirm all the provided details, then proceed to register by paying the exam registration fee.

Apart from registering through an ETS account, applicants can also register through mail or phone services by filling out a registration form PDF available on the official website.

TOEFL Essentials: Registration Process

The Essentials test can only be taken at home as of now. Students would be required to use their personal equipment and will be monitored online while they give the test. To successfully register for the TOEFL Essentials test, applicants must follow the following steps-

Step 1: Make an ETS account

Step 2: Select TOEFL as the preferred test

Step 3: Select the “Register/Find Test Centers and Dates” option on the TOEFL website

Step 4: Students must choose TOEFL Essentials when asked to select between IBT and Essentials

Step 5: After selecting the home edition option (The only available option for this specific test) students will be asked to verify their email address

Step 6: After which, they must confirm the time zone and proceed to select the test date and time and pay the registration fee

Step 7: ETS will send a confirmation mail which would include the link to the test which should be selected on the test date in order to appear for the exam, hence, be sure to keep the email safe

TOEFL Reschedule and Cancellation

The exam slot may occasionally be cancelled or rescheduled due to various factors, such as technological difficulties or poor weather. One may choose an alternative test date and will not be charged a rescheduling fee if the test is rescheduled by ETS.

Students may plan a free test reschedule or get a full refund of their test fee if they reach the test centre and discover that ETS has cancelled the test administration.

Students may be eligible for reimbursement of reasonable and documented travel expenses only within 30 days of the original test date if ETS cancels a test administration. Refunds are given in the same currency that was used to book the exam. If students wish to reschedule or cancel their exam slots, they will be charged a fee. 

The ETS Account

One’s ETS account can be used for various purposes apart from TOEFL registration. Some features that can be used include-

• Reschedule, cancel or view registration
• View or apply for accommodations
• Buy official test prep materials and guides
• Sign up for TOEFL® Search Service
• Download or view score reports
• Purchase additional score reports or other services
• Update personal information, like one’s email or contact information

TOEFL Registration: Documents Required

The type of identification needed will vary depending on the location and citizenship of the test-takers. Indian students will need to present a valid and updated passport as identification. The name that candidates submit while setting up their ETS accounts must exactly match the name on the ID they bring to the test centre. Students won't be allowed to take the test and their test fee won't be refunded if the names don't match. Hence, double-check to make sure the name exactly matches without fail.
