AIBE Eligibility Criteria 2023: The Bar Council of India (BCI) prescribes the eligibility criteria for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). Students aspiring to practise the profession of lawyer in courts are required to qualify the AIBE examination. Candidates are advised to check the eligibility criteria for appearing in the AIBE examination before filling out the application form. Only those students who fulfill the eligibility criteria stated by BCI can register for and appear in the AIBE examination.
The AIBE eligibility criteria include the required educational qualification, enrollment with State Bar Council, and the age limit, if applicable. After verifying that the candidate meets the eligibility criteria, they can fill the registration form that is released on the official website of AIBE. The Certificate of Practice (CoP) will be issued to all the candidates who qualify the AIBE examination, which makes them eligible to practise as a lawyer. Students need to score at least 40% marks in the AIBE exam in order to receive the Certificate of Practice.
In order to appear for the AIBE examination, students need to hold a 3-year or 5-year law degree that is recognized by the Bar Council of India. Additionally, candidates are required to be enrolled with their respective State Bar Councils. There is no upper age limit to appear for the AIBE examination. Students can appear for the bar examination as many times as required to pass the exam. The AIBE 17 examination 2023 was conducted on February 5, 2023. The AIBE registration process for the AIBE 17 examination opened on December 13, 2022 and closed on January 16, 2023.
AIBE Eligibility Criteria 2023
Students aspiring to appear in the AIBE exam 2023 need to check whether they are eligible to write the examination. The Bar Council of India mandates AIBE candidates to be law graduates from BCI-recognized institutions and their 3-year or 5-year law degree needs to be approved by the Bar Council of India. Further, students need to be registered as an advocate with a State Bar Council in order to be eligible to appear for the AIBE examination.
All students who have graduated from the academic session 2009-10 onwards need to appear for the All India Bar Examination to be qualified to practise law in India. If a student received their law degree prior to the academic year of 2009-10, they are not required to clear the AIBE exam in order to practise as a lawyer in the country.

AIBE Exam 2023: Minimum Educational Qualifications
AIBE candidates need to hold some minimum academic qualifications to be eligible to appear for the AIBE exam 2023. Students can check the details on prerequisite educational qualifications to write the AIBE exam given below.
- Students need to have passed a 3-year law degree or a 5-year law degree from an institution of law that is recognized and approved by the Bar Council of India.
- There is no minimum percentage that students are required to secure in their law school examinations to be eligible to appear for the AIBE exam. However, candidates need to have scored the minimum passing marks and fulfilled any other university-specific minimum requirements for graduation.
- If a student has graduated from a foreign university, the law degree of the foreign university needs to be recognized in India in accordance with the rules for ‘Recognition of Degree in Law of a Foreign University’ prescribed by the Bar Council of India and its Legal Education Committee.
AIBE Exam 2023 : Enrollment with State Bar Council
Candidates need to be enrolled as an advocate with a State Bar Council to be eligible to appear in the AIBE exam. Enrollment with State Bar Council is only possible after clearing the required courses for graduation in law school. If a student is not enrolled with a State Bar Council, they will not be allowed to appear for the examination.
Students who are provisionally enrolled with the respective State Bar Council and have submitted an undertaking to clear the examination within two years of enrollment have the right to practise for a period of two years. However, there is no limitation on the number of attempts to clear the bar examination. Students can appear for the AIBE exam as many times as required to pass the examination.
AIBE Exam 2023 : Eligibility Exemptions
Certain law graduates are exempted from the requirement to appear for the All India Bar Examination. If a candidate has obtained their law degree before the academic year of 2009-10, they are not required to appear for the AIBE exam to be eligible to practise law. If a student has graduated with a law degree before the academic session of 2009-10 but has enrolled with State Bar Council later, they are also exempted from appearing in the bar examination.
AIBE Exam 2023 : Eligibility for Certificate of Practice
Students need to score at least 40% marks in the AIBE examination to clear it and obtain the certificate of practice. The score card of the AIBE exam does not mention any percentage/percentile/ranking score and there is no cut off released by Bar Council of India. The AIBE examination results only mention whether the student has passed or failed the bar examination. For SC/ST/PWD candidates, the exam passing criteria is 35% marks.
