CLAT Eligibility 2026: Education Qualification, Age Limit, Reservation

CLAT Eligibility 2026: The Consortium of NLUs releases eligibility criteria for CLAT UG and PG exams along with the exam notification. Only the candidates who fulfill the criteria are considered eligible for the Common Law Admission Test.

CLAT Eligibility 2026: The Consortium of National Law Universities prepares the eligibility crteria for the Common Law Admission Test. The notification for the same is issued online which includes details about the eligibility criteria including age limit, educational qualifications, etc. Applicants planning to appear for the CLAT exam 2026 must check the eligibility requirements to know if they qualify to register for the test. 

Every year, the Consortium of NLUs determines who is eligible to take the CLAT exam. Therefore, before submitting CLAT Registration form, candidates should check the eligiblity criteria for the same. Candidates will be disqualified if the authorities find them to be ineligible. 

CLAT Eligibility 2026

Candidates must be informed of the criteria for their chosen degree before applying for admission to NLUs through CLAT 2026. If an applicant is shortlisted, the participating NLUs will additionally double-check to see if they meet the qualifying requirements. The eligibility requirements for UG and PG courses for CLAT are summarised as follows.

CLAT Eligibility 2026: Undergraduate

To be eligible for CLAT UG programs, students must meet the following requirements-

  • There is no declared upper age limit for students planning to register for UG Programs through CLAT.
  • 10+2 education is mandatory from a recognized or accredited state or central board.
  • A minimum of 45% marks or the equivalent grade is mandatory in 12th if the student falls in the General / OBC / PWD / NRI / PIO / OCI categories
  • A minimum of 40% marks or the equivalent grade is compulsory if the candidate belongs to the ST/SC categories.
  • The candidate must provide their qualifying examination (10+2) score at the time of admission; otherwise, they will not be admitted to the program for which they may have applied.
  • Students appearing for the 12th exams in March/April 2026 are also eligible to attempt the exam. However, they must submit a valid mark sheet without which they will stand disqualified. 

CLAT Eligibility 2026: Postgraduate

To be eligible for the CLAT PG programs, candidates must meet the following criteria-

  • Students must proclaim a LI.B Degree or an equivalent degree 
  • Students belonging to the General/OBC/PWD/NRI/PIO/OCI categories will need to have a minimum of 50% marks or an equivalent grade
  • Students belonging to the ST/SC categories will need to have a minimum of 45% of marks or an equivalent grade
  • There will be no upper age limit
  • Applicants appearing for such qualifying exams in April/May 2026 are also eligible for the exam

If two or more candidates end up getting similar scores in the exam, a tie-breaking policy will arise. Even though the policy is similar for both UG and PG courses, it is still designed differently. Read on to know the tie-breaking policy for UG and PG degrees

Tie-Breaking for UG

  • Students with higher marks scored in the Legal Aptitude section in the CLAT exam would be given priority
  • Students higher in age would be given priority 
  • If these factors do not solve the matter, a computerized draw of lots would be done

Tie-Breaking for PG

There will be no comparison of sectional marks in case students attain equal marks in CLAT 2025 for PG courses. The policy will include-

  • Students higher in age will be given priority
  • If that does not break the tie, a computerized draw of lots will be done

As per the latest notice issued by Consortium of NLUs, the reservation criteria of NLUJA, Assam, MNLU Mumbai, and MNLU Aurangabad has been revised for CLAT 2025.

The following new reservations have been included in MNLU Nagpur: 

  • Reservation has been added for UG and PG applicants in Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC)
  • Candidates with domicile of Maharashtra are eligible to apply

The following new reservations have been added to MNLU Mumbai and MNLU Aurangabad:

  • For UG and PG, Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC) reservation has been added.
  • Candidates with domicile of Maharashtra are eligible to apply. Eligible candidates are requested to update their reservation.

The following reservations have been added to NLUJA for UG and PG:  

  • EWS of Assam
  • Wards of defence personnel in Assam (defence personnel can be from any part of India but must be posted in Assam)

What is the minimum age to attempt the CLAT exam 2026?

There are no age limit requirements set by the exam conducting body. Although, students must complete the grade 12th education to be eligible for CLAT- hence, they must at least be 18 years of age.

What is the upper age limit for CLAT 2026?

Students falling in any age group may apply for LLM and LLB programs because there is no upper age limit for the CLAT PG and UG Exams. Students must, however, have completed high school, therefore they must be at least 18 years old.

What are the minimum marks needed in class 12th to be eligible for CLAT?

For UG courses, students must have at least need a minimum of 45 per cent of marks in the 12th class. ST/SC may have 40% for the same. For PG courses, the minimum marks requirement would be at least 50%. For ST/SC this would be 45%.

Can NRIs apply for CLAT?

Yes, NRIs can register and attempt the CLAT examination given that they provide the required documents.

What is the CLAT tie-breaking policy?

If students score equal marks in CLAT UG and PG programs, a tie-breaking policy is conducted which functions on age, marks, and computerized draws.
