MCAT Scores 2023 : Check MCAT Score Report, MCAT Exam Scoring and MCAT Rescoring

MCAT Scores 2023: Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) releases the MCAT(Medical College Admission Test) score card on its official website. The test scores will be available on the AAMC official website for viewing post 5 p.m. ET on the date of score release scheduled for the particular exam date. Candidates can check their scores by logging into the MCAT Score Reporting System.

The MCAT total score ranges from 472 to 528. The total score is based on the four sections, which are, critical analysis and reasoning skills; biological and biochemical foundations of living systems; chemical and physical foundations of biological systems; and psychological, social, and biological foundations of behaviour. The score range of each of the 4 sections is 118 to 132. 

The MCAT score report mentions the total score, section-wise scores, confidence band, percentile rank for each section, and overall percentile rank. The MCAT scores are required as a part of the admissions process for most medical schools in the United States and Canada. A good MCAT score is essential for securing admission in top medical schools such as Johns Hopkins University, Harvard University, Stanford University, and Yale University.

MCAT Scores 2023

Candidates can check their MCAT scores by visiting the official website of AAMC. Students can view their MCAT total score, section-wise scores, and percentile rank in the score report released on the AAMC official website. On the basis of their performance, students can decide whether they wish to retake the exam. Candidates can appear for the MCAT exam only for three times in one year and four times over a period of two consecutive years. Further, each student is allowed to take the exam only seven times in their lifetime. 

The MCAT scores are released 30-35 days after an exam date. Students need to click on ‘get your test scores’ and sign in to their AAMC account to view their score card. If a student thinks that there has been an error in the scoring, they can apply for rescoring of their answers wherein the candidate’s answers will be independently rescored by hand. 

MCAT Score Report

The MCAT score report is crucial as it consists of information on the basis of which admissions committees of medical schools evaluate a candidate’s readiness for medical education. The MCAT score report gives the following details : 

• Percentile Ranks: The percentile rank indicates the percentage of students who scored equal to or less than the candidate. 
• Confidence Band: Confidence band shows the range in which the candidate’s true scores are likely to be placed. Confidence band signifies the accuracy of the candidate’s section-wise scores and total scores. 

• Score Profile: The score profile indicates the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses across all four sections. If a candidate decides to retake the exam, they can understand which areas they need to focus on from the score report. 

• Sections: The MCAT total score is the sum of the scores obtained in the following four sections : 

1. Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
2. Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
3. Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
4. Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behaviour

• Section-wise Scores: Each of the four sections has a score ranging from 118 to 132. Steps to Check MCAT Scores

Candidates can follow the steps given below to check their MCAT scores. 

Step 1 : Students are required to visit the official website of AAMC

Step 2 : Click on ‘students and residents’ from the top menu bar of the homepage

Step 3 : Click on the link ‘Taking the MCAT exam’ 

Step 4 : Students are required to click on the tab ‘get your test scores’ 

Step 5 :  Sign in to the AAMC account using username and password

Step 6 : Under ‘My Reports’, click on ‘Print Score Report’ 

MCAT Exam Scoring

• The raw score for each of the four sections is based on the number of questions which have been answered correctly in each section by the candidate.
• There is no negative marking. 
• Each of the section-wise raw scores is converted into scaled scores ranging from 118 (lowest) to 132 (highest). 
• The total scaled score is the combination of the four sectional scores and ranges from 472 to 528. 

MCAT Rescoring

Although the possibility of errors in MCAT scoring is extremely low due to multiple quality checks by AAMC, candidates can nevertheless apply for rescoring if they believe that there has been an error in the scoring. Students can request for their answers to be independently rescored by hand to double-check the accuracy of the scores. AAMC will respond to the rescoring application within three weeks of its receipt. The response letter will either confirm the original scores or inform the corrected scores for the sections.

To register for rescoring of their answers, candidates need to submit an MCAT Rescore Request through the MCAT Registration System. Applications for rescoring need to be submitted within 30 days of the score release date. The fee for rescoring the application is $ 65 and the rescoring application is not complete without the fee payment. 

MCAT Cutoff 2023

Aspiring medical students need a good MCAT score in order to be accepted into the top medical colleges in the United States and Canada. The MCAT score range is from 472 to 528. The highest-ranking medical schools require an MCAT score ranging from 515 - 522. The best medical colleges include Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, Harvard University, Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania. 

Candidates must note that different universities have varied requirements in terms of MCAT scores. The top medical schools such as Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Yale School of Medicine require an MCAT score of around 521. Students are advised to get an understanding of their MCAT score report to predict their probability of securing admission to their colleges of preference. 

According to the top 39 medical colleges ranked in terms of research and primary care by U.S. News and World Report, the average MCAT score in 2022 was 518.
