XAT Exam Pattern 2026: The Xavier School of Management (XLRI), Jamshedpur, prescribes the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) exam pattern. For candidates planning to appear for the XAT 2026, understanding the XAT syllabus and exam pattern is the first step towards smart preparation. XAT 2026 will be conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI) and serves as a gateway to more than 250 B-schools across India. Since its inception in 1955, the exam has been known for testing not just academics but also decision-making, ethics, and overall managerial aptitude.

The XAT exam pattern is designed to test problem-solving, logical thinking, and decision-making skills. XAT Exam Pattern 2026

The XAT exam pattern mentions the sections in the exam, exam mode, exam duration, number of questions and marking scheme. 

There are a total of three sections in Part I and one section in Part II of the XAT 2026 exam. There are 95 questions in total, with a duration of 180 minutes. PwD candidates are given an additional 20 minutes per hour. 

XAT Exam Pattern 2026: Section-wise Question Distribution

Candidates are advised to practice reading comprehension daily, solve past year XAT papers to understand question formats, and focus on decision-making caselets for logical, practical answers. It is advisable to attempt all GK questions since there is no negative marking.

XAT Exam Pattern 2026: Marking Scheme

Candidates can check the XAT 2026 marking scheme from the table given below. 

• 1 mark will be awarded for each correct answer. 
• There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for each incorrect answer in Part I.
• If there are more than 8 unattempted questions, 0.10 mark will be deducted for each unanswered question in Part I. 
• Scores of the General Knowledge section are only for final selection and not for shortlisting candidates for GD/Interview. 

It is advisable to balance speed and accuracy in Part 1 due to negative marking. The Decision-Making section also becomes very important as it tests ethical challenges, conflicting interests, and managerial problems. It is a key differentiator that reflects real-world corporate scenarios.

XAT 2026 Exam Structure

The XAT 2026 exam is structured into two parts with four main sections. Given below are the details on the XAT paper format.

Part 1

1. Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR)

• Approximately 26 Questions
• Important Topics: Reading Comprehension (poems, cartoons, passages), vocabulary, analogy, parajumbles, grammar, critical & analytical reasoning, cloze tests
• Focus: Tests command over English and logical structuring of thoughts

2. Decision Making (DM)

• Approximately 21 Questions
• Important Topics: Scenarios from personal & professional life, critical thinking, problem-solving, prioritisation to make informed decisions
• Focus: Evaluates ethical judgment and real-world decision-making ability

3. Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA & DI)

• Approximately 28 Questions
• Important Topics: Arithmetic, geometry, algebra, mensuration, modern math, and data interpretation, requiring insightful analysis
• Focus: Strong numerical ability and analytical skills

Part 2

General Knowledge (GK)

• Approximately 20 Questions  (8 static GK + 12 current affairs)
• Important Topics: Economy, politics, business, sports, awards, science, world events, Constitution of India
• Focus: Gauges awareness; GK scores are used by XLRI for final selection

The static GK portion comprises History, Geography, Business, Economy, and the Current Affairs part focuses on the Indian economy, budget updates, international organisations, awards, books and authors, politics, and science.

In the XAT Syllabus 2026, the Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning section focuses on: reading comprehension passages (including poems and cartoons), critical and analytical reasoning, para-completion and jumbled sentences, vocabulary, analogies, idioms and phrases, grammar-based questions, and cloze tests. 

The section on decision making focuses on ethical dilemmas in workplace situations, managerial caselets, business decision scenarios, and situations involving fairness, distribution and prioritisation.

The section on Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation comprises:
