NIT Jamshedpur: Admission, Ranking, Placement, Scholarship and Infrastructure

National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur (NIT Jamshedpur) was established on August 15, 1960 as the Regional Institute of Technology (RIT). It was one of the first eight Regional Engineering Colleges (REC) established during the second five year plan with the aim to enhance technological advancement in regional higher education. It was the only REC in the country which was named RIT. In 2002, all the RECs were converted into NITs including RIT Jamshedpur. The NIT Jamshedpur is fully funded and governed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. 

The NIT Jamshedpur was given the status of the Institute of National Importance on August 15, 2007 through NIT Act. It is located in the outskirts of the city of Jamshedpur, which is a well planned industrial city of India. The NIT Jamshedpur is ranked within the range of 101-150 under the engineering category in the NIRF Ranking 2023.

The NIT Jamshedpur offers various courses at UG, PG and doctoral levels of technical education. The number of undergraduate programmes at the institute is 8 while that of postgraduate is 23 and PhD admission is offered by all the 11 departments of the institute. The NIT Jamshedpur admission for BTech programme is based on JEE Main scores and JoSAA counselling. For PG Admission, there are several national level exams and centralised counsellings. 

According to the latest NIT Jamshedpur Placement report, The highest CTC was INR 83 LPA for the placement session 2022- 2023. The total placement percentage stood out to be 98.87 percent and more than 750 job offers were made this year. Around 250 companies visited the campus including some big names like Adobe, Deloitte, HSBC, Amazon, Reliance and many more.

Latest Updates: 

• The last date to apply for CCMT and CCMN for MTech and MSc admission respectively is June 7, 2024 on the official websites of CCMT and CCMN.
• The JoSAA counselling for the BTech admission 2024 application process will start on June 10, 2024. The last date to apply is June 18, 2024.
• The NIMCET exam for MCA admission at NITs is scheduled to be held on June 8, 2024. The admit card for the same is out.
• The written test and interview for the PhD admission was held on May 30, 2024. The result for the same will be out on June 7, 2024.

NIT Jamshedpur Location

The NIT Jamshedpur is located in the western part of the Jamshedpur city. Its main campus is near the state border with states of Orissa and West Bengal. Its strategic location in the industrial belt facilitates industry based learning and excellence in higher technical education, research and development. 

The institute is strategically located with the unique advantage of being surrounded by giant and medium scale industries like Tata-Steel, Telco, Indian Steel Wire Products, Tata Tubes, Tinplate Company, Tata Timken etc. and reputed Institutes like the National Metallurgical Laboratory, Xavier Labour Relations Institute and National Institute of Foundry and Forge Technology, Ranchi.

The NIT Jamshedpur is well connected to the rest of the country through road, rail and air. The Tatanagar railway station is 8.5 kms from the institute while the Jamshedpur main bus stand is 9.5 kms. The nearest airport is Birsa Munda Airport, Ranchi which is about 155 kms from the NIT Jamshedpur.

NIT Jamshedpur Admissions

The NIT Jamshedpur offers UG, PG and doctoral levels of courses. There are 11 departments with 8 undergraduate programmes, 23 postgraduate programmes and PhD programmes. The NIT Jamshedpur admission is on the basis of national level tests (JEE Main/ GATE/ IIT-JAM) scores and common counselling (JoSAA/CSAB/ CCMT/ CCMN/ NIMCET).

The NIT Jamshedpur offers a number of scholarships based on merit as well as on merit cum means. The welfare department of the Jharkhand government offers a scholarship of INR 2 lakh to the students of Jharkhand belonging to the category of SC, ST or OBC. 

Under the OP Jindal Engineering and Management Scholarships (OPJEMS), the first three toppers of 2nd, 3rd and 4th year based on the academic performance in the previous year are eligible for scholarships in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering.

NIT Jamshedpur Infrastructure

NIT Jamshedpur has its 341.3 acres of sprawling campus located at the outskirts of the Steel City of India, Jamshedpur. Being located amidst rich mineral land and one of the important industrial belt of India, the NIT Jamshedpur campus has the Main building, the Library, the Computer Center, 13 hostels (7 Boys hostels, 6 Girls hostels), 2 hostels Under-Construction, staff quarters, Guest House, a Students Gymkhana, a Post-office , a branch of State Bank of India, two ATMs, central store and a dispensary. The institute also has courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and tennis along with cricket, hockey and football grounds.
