JNTU Hyderabad was founded by an Act of the State Legislature of Andhra Pradesh in 1972 with the aim of promoting advanced education and research in technology and engineering, especially in the region around present-day Telangana. Initially, it started as a college offering undergraduate programs in engineering. Over time, it evolved into a university and began offering postgraduate programs and conducting research in diverse fields of technology. It was later renamed Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in honor of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, who was instrumental in promoting scientific and technological progress in India.

The rationale behind the establishment of the JNTU Hyderabad was to promote higher education in the field of technology and innovation, that would serve the growing industrial sector. It gained a reputation as an ideal place for professionals in the field of engineering and students from every part of the country and also from foreign countries were fascinated to study there.
