Assam University: Assam University was founded in 1994 under the Assam Central University Act. Located in the land of Hills in Dargakona, about 20 km from Silchar. Assam University campus is nestled among expansive hillocks and the characteristic landscape of Northeast India. Spanning 600 acres, it offers an ideal setting for researchers, students, and those pursuing academic excellence. Another campus of the university is located in Diphu, within the Karbi Anglong district of Assam.

The university's jurisdiction encompasses five districts in Assam: Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dima Hasao (formerly North Cachar Hills), and Karbi Anglong.

The University of Assam is recognized by the UGC, the Ministry of Education under the Government of India. AU is also a member of the AICTE. It has been placed in the 101-150 rank band in the NIRF 2024 rankings. 

Assam University has Sixteen Schools, with over 30+ departments and multiple courses at the Postgraduate and PhD levels with some certification courses. The oldest department at Assam University is the Department of Bengali.

Assam University Campus and Infrastructure

Assam University's main campus is located in Dargakona, about 20 kilometers from Silchar. It is surrounded by beautiful hills and the typical scenery of Northeast India. The campus covers 600 acres, providing a great place for researchers, students, and anyone interested in academic success. There is also another campus in Diphu, in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam.

Library: The central library at Assam University has over 127,000 books and subscribes to more than 1,100 journals, both in print and online. It also provides access to over 10,000 electronic resources through platforms like e-Shodh Sindhu, DELNET, and DELCON. The library uses Koha Integrated Library Management Software for its services and has a reading room with seating for 200 and an internet lab with 20 computers.

Games and Sports: Each year, the university hosts a social event that includes cultural activities as well as indoor and outdoor sports. Assam University is a member of the Inter-University Sports Board of India and participates in various tournaments across the country, winning awards and medals.

Hostels: Currently, Assam University has nine hostels—four for boys and five for girls—equipped with basic amenities. The university also provides meal services for students who can choose their meal preferences when they enroll.
