The IIT Guwahati offers PhD (Engineering) programmes in all the engineering departments of the institute. The minimum qualification required for the PhD admissions is a MTech degree with a minimum of 60 percent marks or 6.0 CGPA on a 10 point scale. The eligibility criteria and the fees for the PhD programme is given below.

The IIT Guwahati tuition fees for the PhD programme is INR 2,500 per semester. The other charges including one time admission fee, deposits and semester charges are not included in this fee. These components of the fee are given below in detail.

- Candidates willing to apply for the PhD admissions at IIT Guwahati must have a masters degree in engineering or technology. They must have secured at least 60 percent marks or 6.0 CGPA on a 10 point scale in the qualifying degree.
- A four year BTech programme with 70% marks from the CFTIs is also accepted as a qualifying degree.
- Candidates are also required to qualify national level exams like GATE / CEED / JEST / UGC-NET / CSIR-NET including lectureship (Assistant Professorship) or equivalent or holding a national level fellowship.
- A degree in bachelor’s or master’s from any of the IITs with CGPA more than 8.0 are excluded from qualifying the national level exams.
Candidates belonging to the SC/ST/PwD category must have secured at least 55 percent marks or 5.5 CGPA on a 10 point scale in the qualifying degree for the PhD Admissions at IIT Guwahati.
