North-Eastern Hill University(NEHU),is a public central university located in Shillong, Meghalaya. It was established under the act of parliament in 1973.It has campuses under it with its main campus located in Mawkynroh-Umshing, Shillong and Chasingre, Tura. NEHU has its main campus in Shillong, spread over 1225 acres of land. The University holds recognition by University Grants Commission (UGC) with ‘A’ grade accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council(NAAC). In India’s NIRF Rankings 2023 NEHU secured 80th rank among all top universities across India.

A diverse array of professional courses and other degrees are offered by NEHU with 53 affiliated colleges including undergraduate colleges and eight professional colleges offering disciplines like science, social sciences, law, engineering, humanities and others.It is one of the first few universities that provided affiliation to ‘Minority Educational Institutions’ with its objective to disseminate knowledge with improvement and welfare of people of North-Eastern region with commendable academic and cultural advancement. Admissions are based on merit and entrance exam scores like CAT, CMAT, ACPC, CUET-PG and others. 

The university is known for its MSc and MBA courses with a high percentage of students clearing NET, GATE along with other national tests.

With its faculty of over 300 NEHU has established itself as a prominent institution in just about 50 years with an excellent academic background with a clear vision for its future with its social and cultural agenda. A free coaching of civil services exams are provided to SC and OBC students via its Dr. Ambedkar Centre.

As per the university placement notice, the highest package offered was INR 10.80 LPA with an average package of INR 4.80 LPA, with top participating recruiters from companies like Cognizant, Capgemini,HCL, TCS, Accenture and Infosys.

NEHU has also made a collaboration by signing MoUs with multiple companies, organizations, institutions like the University of Chulalongkorn, Thailand, Gujarat University, K.L. Bajoria College, and others. The university has successfully secured 24th rank by The Week 2023 under the overall university category.

Admissions to various undergraduate and postgraduate courses are held in online mode, generally in the month of may every year. Candidates are given admission in NEHU on the basis of merit and scores obtained in entrance exams like CAT, CMAT, ACPC, CUET-PG. Various PhD courses have also been offered by the university.
