PhD (Humanities and Social Sciences)
IIT Kanpur PhD (Humanities and Social Sciences) is the doctoral program offered by various departments. The qualifying degree for the PhD course is a masters degree in the relevant subject or masters in engineering/technology with marks not below the specified minimum. The institute also conducts a written test and interview for the shortlisted candidates.
Eligibility
- Students must have a masters degree in relevant subject or in engineering with minimum specified marks.
- They can also have a BTech with 75% marks and a valid GATE/JRF score. The GATE requirement is waived off in case the BTech is from a CFTI.
- MSc with 65% marks is also accepted with JRF or GATE score
- Final admission will be offered based on the interview.
Fees
- The tuition fee for the M.Tech program at IIT Kanpur is INR 2500 per semester.
- Candidates from SC/ST/PWD categories are exempted from the tuition fee.

The fee for PhD in Engineering at IIT Kanpur for the academic year 2024-25 is INR 7125 per semester. This fee does not include one time payments at the time of admission, security deposits and the hostel charges. Candidates who are willing to apply for IIT Kanpur PhD admissions in humanities and social science subjects should have a masters degree in relevant subject with a minimum specified marks. They can also have a MTech/M.E. degree with marks not below the specified minimum.
Candidates should also have a valid score in GATE/JRF/JEST/INSPIRE fellowship. The GATE/JRF/JEST requirement is waived off in case the MSc is from IITs or IISERs
