UPPSC Pattern 2024: The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) conducts the PCS exam for the recruitment of candidates to work with the UP government for different posts. The UPPSC administers recruitment exams for a variety of positions, including Review Officer (RO)/Assistant Review Officer (ARO), the Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF)/Range Forest Officer (RFO),  and others. The examination is conducted in three stages, namely the Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Although the exam pattern and UPPSC Syllabus vary depending on the selected job post and type of exam, the general pattern for Prelims and Mains remains the same. 

Starting UPPSC Prelims 2018 onward, the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) revised the PCS Test Pattern. The syllabus and question types are now based on the new exam pattern. In the new format, applicants no longer have optional subject papers as they have been replaced by additional general studies papers. As discussed earlier, the exam has three main selection stages that candidates must prepare for. These are: 

  • Preliminary Exam: The preliminary test, which is the initial and the first round in the hiring process, is an objective-type paper. There are two critical papers in this stage: General Studies I and General Studies II (also called the CSAT paper).
  • Mains Exam: The main exam, which is the second stage of the selection process, is offered to candidates who passed the preliminary exam. A written test plus an interview make up the main exam. Six papers comprise the written test.

UPPSC Mains Optional Subjects

Prior to 2023, the UPPSC mains exam used to have two optional papers instead of general studies papers 5 and 6. A list of 35 subjects used to be given to registered applicants to choose from.

Although, according to the updated and recent exam pattern, the optional papers will not be a part of the curriculum. Instead, applicants will be asked questions on the state of Uttar Pradesh in the form of paper 5 and paper 6.

UPPSC Interview Pattern 2024

Candidates who pass the Mains round of the PCS Exam are invited to the UPPSC Viva/Personality Test/Interview. The interview, which is worth 100 marks under the new PCS exam pattern, gauges candidates' general knowledge, moral integrity, capacity to convey their strengths and personalities, intelligence, and general aptitude for the military. 

The PCS Interview has witnessed modifications according to the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission. Originally, the interview panel would be comprised of subject specialists, IPS officers, and IAS officers. Former judges, brigadiers, and renowned educators will now also be invited in for interviews. The interview board's authority has grown as a result of this development.

How many selection rounds are there in UPPSC exam?

In UPPSC exam 2024, there are three major rounds that applicants will need to clear in order to be selected. These are the Prelims, Mains, and Interview rounds. 

What is the purpose of the UPPSC prelims exam?

The UPPSC prelims exam is a qualifying exam and those who clear it is then selected for further rounds of the selection process. The marks scored in prelims are not taken into consideration and the final selection is based on the student’s performance in the mains and interview rounds.

Is there any negative marking in the UPPSC exam?

Yes, there is a negative marking in the UPPSC exam and for every incorrect answer 0.33% of marks will be deducted. If applicants select more than one option in any question, negative markings will prevail. Those questions which are left unattended will remain unmarked.
