IIT NIRF Ranking 2023: The Indian Institute of Technology is considered one of the pioneering institutions for engineering. Students from various corners of the country aspire to enrol in different IITs. According to the NIRF ranking 2023, IIT Madras topped the list by securing rank 1, whereas IIT Delhi bagged the second position on the list.  Over the years, some of the prominent IITs have introduced different courses in their course list for students. These premier institutions have consistently adapted to the industry’s and society’s evolving demands.  Candidates can take a look at the different courses introduced by the top 10 IITs under the NIRF ranking. 

IITs offer a diverse range of academic pathways, from specialized programs like BTech Engineering in Physics at IIT-Indore and IIT-Patna to groundbreaking interdisciplinary options like the dual degree in quantum technology at IIT Bombay, providing students with a wealth of choices to match their interests and aspirations. The main aim behind introducing new courses every year is to equip students with the skills and knowledge required for the future.

IIT Madras

NIRF Ranking 2023: 01

In the year 2022, IIT Madras introduced a new course for students named BS Degree in Data Science and Applications. Through this course, candidates can make an early exit at the foundation, diploma, or BSc degree level. The focus of the course is for candidates to develop programming skills and data science expertise. 

Eligibility: To be eligible for admission to the BS Degree in Data Science and Application, candidates must have completed class 12. Those who meet this requirement can join the program immediately. Additionally, candidates who have appeared for their class 11 final exams are eligible to apply for the program. Those who qualify can join the program after passing Class 12

In 2019, IIT Madras introduced a start-up which goes by the name ‘Padh AI’ which was an online platform offering courses for those students who wish to learn more about AI. Annually, the highest-achieving students from courses available on the portal will receive invitations to participate in a “summer garage.” 

This garage serves as an AI residency program hosted at the IIT-Madras Research Park, offering students the opportunity to engage in research, address issues with societal significance, or develop solutions with commercial value.

IIT Delhi 

NIRF Ranking 2023: 02

In 2022, IIT Delhi added 5 new courses to their course list including M. Tech in Electric Mobility, MTech in Machine Intelligence & Data Science, M.Tech. in Biomolecular and Bioprocess Engineering, MS (R) in Transportation Safety and Injury Prevention and Bachelor of Design. Candidates can further take a look at the eligibility criteria for all 5 courses. 

  1. M. Tech in Electric Mobility

Eligibility: To enrol in the course, candidates must have a years Bachelor’s degree in either Production Engineering, Mechatronics, Automobile, Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Manufacturing Science/Engineering. Also, candidates must have qualified the GATE exam in Electrical Engineering (EE) or Mechanical Engineering (ME) or Production and Industrial Engineering (PI) disciplines.

Course Aim: The Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART) hosted the M. Tech in Electric Mobility programme on the IIT Delhi campus. The focus of the course is towards the topics concerning electric vehicles, drivetrains, chargers, charging infrastructure, battery energy storage systems, Battery Management Systems, the reusability of energy storage components, reliability, automotive health monitoring, Automotive NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness), vehicle dynamics, autonomous and connected vehicles, vehicular telematics, and materials for electric vehicles. 

  1. MTech in Machine Intelligence & Data Science

Eligibility: To enrol in the course, a candidate must have a four-year B.Tech./B.E Degree (first class) or other equivalent degree. Also, the candidate must obtain a valid GATE score.

Course Aim: The  MTech programme in Machine Intelligence and Data Science (MINDS) was offered by the Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence (ScAI). By enrolling in this course, candidates will be able to work on the problems related to AI. 

  1. M.Tech. in Biomolecular and Bioprocess Engineering

Eligibility: To be eligible to enrol in the M.Tech in Bioprocess Engineering, candidates must have a B.E./B. Tech./ M.Sc. or equivalent degree. Those candidates who have an MTech or MS(R) degree should have a minimum duration of 4 semesters for full-time and 6 semesters for part-time programmes.

Course Aim: The main aim of the M.Tech in Bioprocess Engineering is to bring out students with special skills in the area of Biological Engineering.

  1. MS (R) in Transportation Safety and Injury Prevention 

Eligibility: Candidates wishing to enrol in the course must have a B.Tech/B.Arch/B.Plan/MSC/MA/MBBS with at least 60% or Grade point 6 out 10.

Course Aim: The main aim of the MS (R) in Transportation Safety and Injury Prevention is to create cutting-edge knowledge which is successful in tackling road transport and traffic safety challenges in India and regions with comparable socio-economic conditions

  1. Bachelor of Design

Eligibility: Candidates must have a valid UCEED score to apply for the course. 

Course Aim: Bachelor of Design is a four-year course which offers a deep understanding of product design, interaction design, and communication design.

In 2021, IIT Delhi introduced another new programme of BTech in Energy Engineering in which the  Centre for Energy Studies (CES) at IIT Delhi was converted into the Department of Energy Science and Engineering and new courses were launched. 

IIT Bombay 

NIRF Ranking 2023: 03

According to a report by The Indian Express, IIT Bombay is all set to introduce an Interdisciplinary Dual Degree Programme (IIDDP) in Quantum Technology soon. Students who are currently enrolled in any Bachelor of Technology (BTech) course will be allowed to enrol in the IIDDP program.

Though the structure of the course is still in the finalization phase, it is expected that the duration of the course will be two years with the main focus on quantum technology. Candidates studying under this program will be eligible to either earn a two-year bachelor’s degree or a 5-year master’s degree.

IIT Kanpur 

NIRF Ranking 2023: 04

IIT Kanpur introduced 4 new online postgraduate courses including Business leadership in the digital age, artificial intelligence and machine learning, renewable energy and e-mobility, and climate finance and sustainability, for working professionals. 

Eligibility: Candidates wishing to enrol in these courses must have a  Bachelor’s degree (a 4-year program) or a Master’s degree in the relevant field with a minimum of 55% marks or a CPI of 5.5/10 is required. Also, candidates must have two years of work experience.

Back in 2021, IIT Kanpur yet again introduced 4 e-masters courses including programs in Communication Systems, Cybersecurity, Power Sector Regulation, Economics and Management, and Commodity Markets and Risk Management. 

IIT Roorkee 

NIRF Ranking 2023: 05

In 2021, IIT Roorkee launched seven new academic programmes. These programmes were offered to students from the upcoming autumn session (2021-2022). These 7 courses include M. Tech. (Microelectronics and VLSI), M.Tech. in Dam Safety and Rehabilitation program,  MS Economics,  M. Des. (Industrial Design), MIM (Masters in Innovation Management), MTech (Artificial Intelligence) and M. Tech (Data Science).

IIT Kharagpur

NIRF Ranking: 06

Back in 2021, IIT Kharagpur introduced a 4-year BS programme in place of the 5-year integrated MSc programme in 2022 academic year. 

Eligibility: Candidates can enrol in the course based on the JEE Advanced scores and JOSSA counselling. Also, candidates must have completed class 12 or equivalent in the Science stream.

Course Aim: Candidates who wish to pursue an MS degree will have the opportunity to do so upon completing Semester 6 of the 4-year BS program. Subsequently, Semesters 7 and 8 will be structured in a manner that allows a candidate to attain an MS degree after Semester 10 (i.e., the end of year 5).

IIT Guwahati 

NIRF Ranking: 07

On July 4th, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati unveiled an online Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree program in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence through Coursera.

Eligibility: It’s not mandatory to have a JEE Main score. However, those who meet the eligibility criteria and have registered for JEE Advanced (in any year) will be granted direct admission. For those without this qualification, the option exists to complete an online course and secure admission based on their performance. 

IIT Hyderabad 

NIRF Ranking 2023: 08

IIT Hyderabad in 2023, introduced a new BTech programme in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. Through the course, students will have an in-depth understanding of the role of information technology and computer science in assimilating biological data. Candidates will be enrolled in this course based on JEE Advance rankings. 

Back in 2021, IIT Hyderabad introduced seven online MTech programmes and an online MDEs programme. Seven online MTech programs encompass industrial metallurgy, EV technology, computational mechanics, integrated computational materials engineering, communication and signals processing (CSP), power electronics and power systems (PEPS), and microelectronics and VLSI (ME & VLSI). Additionally, there is an online MDes program tailored for working professionals.
