Formerly known as Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, Aligarh Muslim University is a central university, established in 1920, recognized as the Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The university has 13 faculties, 117 teaching departments, 3 academies, and 21 centres and institutions spread out over a 467.6 acre area. There are more than 37327 students enrolled there, as well as 1,686 teachers and 5,610 non-teaching employees. The university has established three new study centres outside of Aligarh in the states of West Bengal's Murshidabad, Kerala's Malappuram, and Bihar's Kishanganj.

More than 300 courses in both classic and contemporary fields of study are available at AMU. In addition to offering standard courses like BA and BSc, the institution is also known for its MBBS and B.Tech programmes. For admission into the majority of the courses, AMU administers its own entrance test (AMUEE). To get admitted to the AMU medical programmes, applicants must take the NEET entrance test. Through its Center For Distance And Online Education, AMU also provides distance learning.
At AMU, the tuition fee of a BA (Hons) programme is INR 1.75 lakh, while the fee of a B.Sc. (Hons) programme is INR 3.6 lakh. For the B.Tech. and B.Arch. programmes, prospective students must pay INR 10.63 lakh and INR 13.27 lakh, respectively.
