CAT 2023: Calculation of Percentile Score
The exam conducting body for CAT calculates the overall and sectional percentile score by following a set formula. Given below are the steps by which candidates can understand how their percentile score is calculated. For reference, the Quantitative Aptitude section has been taken as an example:
Step 1: Take the total number of candidates who appeared for the exam (N); this includes each candidate from the morning, afternoon and evening shifts.
Step 2: Then, assign a rank (r) to each candidate based on the scaled scores secured in the Quantitative Aptitude section.
In case two candidates get an identical score, allot the same rank to both candidates. This means, if two candidates receive identical highest scores, they will both be assigned rank 1.
Step 3: Now, calculate the scores by using the given equation:
𝑃 = (𝑁 − 𝑟/N) x 100
Step 4: Round off the obtained rank by up to two decimal places
This implies that if a candidate receives a rank like 99.995, their rank is automatically rounded off as 100.
The overall percentile rank for CAT results 2023 is also calculated by using a similar method.
