The selection process for international Olympiads involves five stages.

Stage 1 – National Standard Examination (NSE)
The first level is conducted at various centers/schools across the country. NSE tests the foundational knowledge of students in their respective subjects. NSEs in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, Junior Science are organized by IAPT. -
Stage 2 – Indian National Olympiad (INO)
Students who qualify NSE proceed to INO, which involves more rigorous testing. This and all subsequent stages are conducted by Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (HBCSE), Mumbai. -
Stage 3 – Orientation-Cum-Selection Camp (OCSC)
The top performers from INO attend a training camp where they undergo further evaluation. Around 35 students in each subject are selected from INO on the basis of their performance. -
Stage 4 – Pre-Departure Training Camps
Selected students participate in focused training sessions for two weeks to prepare for the international level. -
Stage 5 – International Olympiad
This is the final stage where the national team represents their country and competes against students from around the world. (Photo: HBCSE)
