M.Phil no longer a recognized degree, UGC cautions students

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a notice on December 26, 2023 reminding students about the discontinuation of the M.Phil degree.
The Commission has cautioned students about Universities inviting fresh applications to the M.Phil (Master of Philosophy) program.
In accordance with National Education Policy 2020, UGC had previously declared that the M.Phil degree across all Universities will not be considered legitimate.

This alert arises because several Universities continue to offer the M.Phil degree, despite UGC’s earlier decision to invalidate the course.
UGC informs students that an M.Phil degree is no longer a recognized degree and students are advised to not take admission in M.Phil programs.
Furthermore, UGC has ordered Universities to not offer M.Phil programs and to cease all admissions to M.Phil programs for the academic year 2023-2024.
