The Republic Day, first celebrated on January 26, 1950, signifies the transition of India from a dominion to an independent Republic separate from the British Raj.

The significance of Republic Day can be traced back to the Lahore session of the Indian National Congress conducted at the midnight of December 31, 1929. The roots of the Republican Idea were planted during this session.

The constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent assembly on November 26, 1949 and first came into effect on January 26,1950.

The constitution replaced the Government of India Act,1935 as the governing document of India.

The Constitution of India establishes the fundamental political principles, structure, procedures, powers, and responsibilities of government institutions.

Derived from the suggestions of M. N. Roy, the Indian constitution outlines fundamental rights, directive principles, and citizens' duties.
