The constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent assembly on November 26, 1949 and first came into effect on January 26,1950. The constitution replaced the Government of India Act,1935 as the governing document of India.
The Republic Day, first celebrated on January 26, 1950, also marks the transformation of India from a dominion to a Republic separate from the British Raj.
The Chief Guest of the first Republic Day Parade in 1950 was President Sukarno of Indonesia.

Beating Retreat CeremonyThe Beating Retreat Ceremony denotes the official end of The Republic Day festivities. Conducted on the evening of January 29, it is performed by the bands of three military units: the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.
