As per the latest ASER survey, the arithmetic skills of children in both government and private schools have improved significantly, reaching the highest levels in over a decade

33.7% of Class 3 students could solve subtraction problems, a rise from 28.2% in 2018 and 25.9% in 2022

Among government school students, the figure rose from 20.9% (2018) to 27.6% (2024), with states like Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh seeing an increase of over 15 percentage points

In Class 5 students, 30.7% could solve division problems, a drastic improvement from 25.6% in 2022. Government school students performed better in this area, with Punjab and Uttarakhand attaining more than 10-percentage point increase

Among Class 8 students, the basic arithmetic skills remained steady to earlier levels, improving slightly from 44.1% in 2018 to 45.8% in 2024
