NEET PG 2024: MBBS, PG seats increased, Government approves 157 new medical colleges

Government has introduced the Centrally Sponsored scheme (CSS) under which new medical colleges will be launched by the government in three phases. A total of 157 medical colleges have been approved under the CSS. 108 of these colleges have already been functioning.

In the first phase of CSS, the government would set up 58 government medical colleges in twenty states/Union Territories. In the second phase, 24 medical colleges would be set up in eight states and in the third and final phase, 75 medical colleges would be launched in eighteen states.

As per the government report, there has been an expansion of 82% in the number of government medical colleges.

Before 2014, the number of medical colleges was 387 which has now increased to 706. This has consequently led to an increase in the number of MBBS, PG seats

In the last 10 years, the number of MBBS and PG seats has increased by double, as estimated by the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh Mandaviya.

As per the government data, the number of MBBS seats has increased from 51,348 in 2014 to 1,08,940 now.

The number of PG seats have increased from 39,489 to 70,674 over the span of last ten years.
