The International Mathematics Day is observed every year on March 14 to celebrate the vast subject of mathematics and its importance in the modern day necessities like science, technology and daily life.

March 14 was officially declared as the International Mathematics Day by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) during its 40th General Conference, back in November 2019.

UNESCO has announced “Mathematics and hope" as the theme for International Mathematics Day 2026. The theme highlights the idea that much like hope, mathematics is also a universal human resource.

The first-ever official International Mathematics Day 2026 was celebrated in 2020 under the theme “Mathematics is Everywhere”.

The International Mathematics Day is celebrated on March 14 every year due to its correspondence with the Pi-Day. ‘Pi’ is an important and most-used fundamental quantity in Maths. The date 3/14 (March 14) represents the approximate numerical value of pi which is 3.14.

The day is celebrated across the globe to appreciate the role of Mathematics and its impact on society. The initiative aims at promoting public awareness about the significance of mathematics in solving everyday life problems along with its firm support to scientific and technological development.

In India, the National Mathematics Day is celebrated on December 22 every year to mark the birth anniversary of the famous Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. He made crucial contributions to Indian society by his extensive work in fields like number theory, infinite series and mathematical analysis
