The IDP Education has published the 9th edition of the Emerging Futures report which highlights the changing trends of Indian students while opting for global education. The research was conducted between early March and late April of 2026.

As per IDP’s reports, Indian students are now choosing overseas education based on factors such as career outcomes, affordability and visa certainty.

IDP has recorded responses from more than 5,800 students, among which 962 are Indians, across 118 countries and regions globally.
The report showcases that Indian students are more career-focused compared to global averages. As per the survey, 41% of Indian students said strong career outcomes define value for money. Teaching quality ranked second at 31% while the Industry-aligned skills came third at 27%.

Factors such as affordability and visa clarity have also become critical decisions. 43% of Indian students said tuition fees are too expensive for them to afford, while 32% pointed out rising living costs abroad. Around 28% have underlined the visa difficulties as a major issue.

Countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States remain the top choices of Indian students. According to the reports, students choose a destination by considering factors like Visa rules, Cost of living, Career pathways and Quality of education.

Australia still stands as the top choice for 41% of Indian students who want to study abroad. Nearly around, 63% of Indian students trust Canada and the United States for career-oriented skills. 56% expressed similar confidence in Australia and the United Kingdom.
