India Overtakes China as Leading Source of International Graduate Students in the US Claims Open Doors Report

In the academic year 2022-23, the number of Indian postgraduate students in the US surged by 63% to reach 1.65 lakh, surpassing China for the first time in 15 years. India now holds the top spot, with 1.26 lakh Chinese graduate students in the US during the same period.

The recent Open Doors Report reveals that in the last academic year, 2.68 lakh Indian students were pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the US, including those in Optional Practical Training programs.

This marks a 35% increase from the 1.99 lakh students in 2021-22, representing the largest annual surge in at least 23 years.

Over the last decade, India's share has doubled, increasing from 12% in 2012-13 to 25% in 2022-23, only two percentage points below China's current share of 27%. A decade ago, China held a 31% share.
