GATE 2025 - How has the exam evolved from 1983 to Present day?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, or GATE, was first conducted in 1983 for only two streams - Science and Engineering

It was held for Postgraduate admissions in five IITs (Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur and Kharagpur) and IISc Bangalore

Two papers were conducted initially: Paper 1 for General and Engineering Sciences and Paper 2 for the subject chosen by the candidate

The students who qualified in the GATE exam were entitled to scholarships for 18 months

In the present day, students can appear for as many as 30 disciplines including Humanities and Social Sciences

The eligibility criteria for the GATE exam has stayed the same. However, the paper pattern has changed

The exam now consists of 3 types of questions - Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT)

Students who qualify GATE can now take admission in NITs, IIITs, IITs and CFTIs. They can also apply for various job posts in PSUs
