Doctors Without Teaching Experience Can Now Enter Medical Academia

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has updated teaching eligibility criteria, allowing doctors without prior academic experience to become professors in medical colleges

Consultants, specialists, or medical officers with at least 4 years of experience in a 220-bed hospital can now qualify as assistant professors in medical colleges

Doctors with 10 years of experience as consultants, specialists, or medical officers are now eligible to become associate professors under the new guidelines

The 2022 norms allowed non-teaching doctors to join as assistant professors after working for two years in 330-bed hospitals, only when the hospital was being converted into a medical college

The revised norms require professors to publish only two research papers as associate professors, compared to the 2022 requirement of four publications
