CBSE awards students with positional grades instead of absolute grades. Here's what you need to know about relative grading

CBSE explains that relative grading is not based on predetermined cut offs (or marks range such as 91-100, 81-90, etc.)

 A candidate is graded on the basis of the group he/she falls into according to their relative merit

All passed candidates are put in a rank order divided into 8 equal groups for awarding grades

Top 1/8th of the passed candidates (in a subject) receive A1, next 1/8th of the passed candidates receive A2 and so on

In case of a tie, all students getting the same score are awarded the similar grade

A candidate obtaining identical marks in two subjects may not get the same grade in those subjects in the Relative grading system
