CBSE’s new roadmap, aligned with NEP 2020, replaces rote learning with a flexible, skill-based, and multilingual academic framework to better prepare students for the future.

Effective from 2026-27, a third language is mandatory for Class 6th. This ensures the three-language formula is fully integrated by the year 2031 for Class 10th Board Exams.

English is now categorised as a foreign language. Since students can choose only one, picking English precludes other foreign languages (like French or German) as the remaining two must be native Indian.

CBSE now offers all 22 scheduled languages by adding Dogri, Maithili, Konkani, and Santhali for Class 9th, providing students with unprecedented regional and cultural options.

For 2026-27, Class 9th students can choose Advanced Level Mathematics and Science, offering deeper content for those with high aptitude.

This two-tier system allows students to customise their curriculum. Students can choose Advanced Math or Science; notably, failing an advanced level will not be reflected on their official marksheet.

AI and Computational Thinking are now compulsory for Classes 3 to 8, with Board Exams for these subjects starting in 2029.

Vocational Education is now mandatory for Classes 9th to 10th to provide practical skills, with Board Exams debuting in the 2027-28 session.

Art and Physical Education (PE) are now mandatory core subjects for Classes 9th and 10th, with new standardised textbooks to support school-based internal assessments.

CBSE's long-term roadmap leads to the 2031 Exams. Supporting this, CBSE and NCERT are releasing new third-language textbooks and online materials this month.

International CBSE schools gain flexibility: they must offer only one native Indian language, whereas domestic schools are required to offer two.
