Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023: Gender differences pervade education statistics

The Annual Status of Education Report conducted by the Pratham Foundation is a household survey that aims to record whether children from rural districts of India are enrolled in educational institutions.

The ASER survey is conducted every alternate year in order to collect data regarding the enrollment status of children under the age group of 3-16 years and to assess the reading and arithmetic levels of children falling in the age group of 5-16 years. Check out the key findings of the ASER report for the year 2023.

A total 86.8 percent of children falling under the age group of 14-18 years are enrolled in an educational institution.

The following data presents the percentage of youth not enrolled in an educational institution.

Age: 14 years Percentage of youth not enrolled: 3.9% Age: 18 years Percentage of youth not enrolled: 32.6% It is evident that the percentage of youth not enrolled increases for older age groups.

From Class 11 or higher, the highest percentage of students are enrolled in the Arts/Humanities stream, followed by STEM and then Commerce. The percentage of students enrolled in various streams is given below: Arts/Humanities: 55.7% STEM: 31.7% Commerce: 9.4%

Males are more likely to be enrolled in the STEM stream than females. Number of males enrolled in STEM stream: 36.3% Number of females enrolled in STEM stream: 28.1%

Females (76 per cent) are better at reading than males (70.9 per cent) in reading a Class 2 level text in their regional language. Contrastingly, males do better than their female counterparts in arithmetic and English reading.

The ASER survey also found that more males have access to smartphones than females. The digital literacy rates are also higher among males while females lag behind.
