Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (BIT Mesra) was set up in 1955 by industrialist and philanthropist B.M. Birla with a vision of offering world-class technical education in India. Situated in Mesra, close to Ranchi in Jharkhand, the institute became a Deemed-to-be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act during 1986. BIT Mesra has been a trendsetter in launching fresh academic programmes and subjects in India, the nation's first Department of Space Engineering and Rocketry being one of them. BITS Mesra P.hD admissions

Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (BIT Mesra), Ranchi provides Ph.D. programs in a very large number of disciplines such as Engineering, Architecture, Management, Pharmacy, Sciences, and Allied Fields. There are two admissions in a year, usually in the Spring (January) and Monsoon (July) sessions. The applicants should have a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline with at least 60% marks (55% for some disciplines or reserved categories, according to institute norms). The selection is based on a Ph.D. Entrance Test and Personal Interview. The written test consists of multiple-choice items in Research Methodology and subject matter, and short-listed candidates have to obtain a minimum cut-off percentage designated by the institute (preferably around 30%). National-level award holders of qualifications like UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, JRF, GATE, GPAT, or M.Phil. are exempt from the written test but have to present themselves for the interview. The final choice is made on a merit list with 70% weightage to the written test and 30% weightage to the interview. Candidates applying for the Institute Research Scholarship (IRS) are required to appear in the written test irrespective of exemption status. The duration of Ph.D. programme varies between minimum 3 years to maximum 6 years, extendable as per UGC rules.
