Due to severe cold across north India, many state governments and district authorities have officially ordered schools to close. While many of the states have declared winter vacation, Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddh Nagar has declared schools till class 8 to remain shut till January 10, 2026. The district Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar said that this order applies to all recognised schools affiliated with the CBSE, ICSE, IB, the Uttar Pradesh Board and other boards operating in the district.
In Delhi, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has declared winter vacation from January 1 to 15, 2026 in their official calendar. Similarly, in Jammu and Kashmir, schools up to class 8 will have winter break till February 28, 2026. Assam and Tripura schools will also remain closed till January 10.

Gautam Buddh Nagar
On January 6, 2026, Gautam Buddh Nagar District administration ordered all the schools till class 8 to be closed till January 10, 2026. The order was issued by the district magistrate for student safety amid prevailing weather conditions. On January 6, the region experienced temperatures to be as low as 7 degrees celsius while for the next two days the minimum temperature will remain 8 to 9 degrees. There are also predictions of heavy fog and mist.

Delhi
In the academic calendar of Directorate of Education (DoE), Delhi, the winter vacations for all the schools are scheduled from January 1 to 15, 2026. If the weather conditions remain severe in the national capital, one can expect extension of the school closures in the city.
Lucknow
Schools in Lucknow are ordered to remain closed till January 8, 2026. All the classes till class 8 will not be held due to severe cold and fog conditions. For classes 9 to 12, the school timings are from 10 AM. Several places in the region are experiencing temperatures as low as 5 degree celsius.
Jaipur
Jaipur is witnessing dry chilly winters due to western disturbances. The city’s district administration has closed the schools up to class 5 till January 10 while classes 6 to 8 are closed till January 8, 2026.
Varanasi
The District Basic Education Officer Anurag Shrivastava said that the district magistrate of the region has ordered all the classes up to 8 to remain suspended till January 9, 2026. Experts of IMD have predicted that the cold and dry winds in parts of Uttar Pradesh have caused the temperatures to drop by 3 to 6 degree celsius.
Parents and students are advised to check the official notifications of the education departments and district administrations for all the latest updates on school closures in their region. Schools are also advised to formally inform the students timely. The weather conditions are expected to remain severe in the second week of January.
