With the onset of south-west monsoon in India, many states are witnessing heavy and widespread rainfall. States like Maharashtra, Odisha, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttarakhand have been majorly affected by abundant downpour, due to which school students and their parents in the afore-mentioned are in dilemma about whether the school is closed tomorrow, on July 9, 2026. Taking a precautionary measure, the district Administration of Shivamogga district of Karnataka, has declared holidays for school students today i.e. on July 8, 2026.
As per the reports of India Meteorological Department (IMD), this year the country has received a surplus of 53.3 mm of rainfall between July 1 and July 6, 2026, in comparison with the usual rainfall of 48 mm. Amidst many states receiving heavy rainfall, the precipitation rate in Delhi has plummeted to 6.6 mm as compared to the usual 21 mm, making the union territory 68% rain deficit. States like Maharashtra and Odisha had declared school holidays yesterday, on July 7, 2026, due to heavy rainfall. All the students and parents wondering whether the schools are closed in their respective states can peruse through the sections given below to know the status of schools and IMD’s warning in different states of India.
Schools Shut in Karnataka on July 8
As mentioned earlier, the district administration of Shivamogga has announced that all the schools, pre-university (PU) colleges, and Rural Child Care Centres (Anganwadis) will remain closed on July 8, 2026, i.e. today. With continuous heavy rainfall affecting the area, the schools and other educational institutes of Hosanagar and Sagar taluks of Karnataka’s Shivamogga will not function till further notice. So, the schools are expected to remain closed on July 9, 2026 as well.
No School Holidays in Mumbai and Pune
Dismissing the viral claims of school holiday announcement, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has clarified that the schools will operate normally on July 8, 2026. As a precautionary step, BMC had announced a holiday for schools and colleges on July 7, 2026, due to widespread rainfall in the region. The weather conditions have now improved in Mumbai, and subsequently IMD has shifted the region from orange to yellow zone.
Similarly, in Pune, the administrative authorities had declared a holiday in schools and colleges on July 7 but has not given any new guidelines for July 8 and July 9, 2026 which implies that all the educational institutes will function according to their normal routine. IMD has also not issued any warning for the Pune Region.
Heavy Rainfall Alarms in Uttarakhand
In accordance with reports of IMD dated July 8, 2026, the state will witness light to moderate rain while thunderstorms accompanied with rain might occur in most districts of the state. As per the department’s recent warnings, heavy rains will severely affect the districts like Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, Champawat and Bageshwar. As of now, the administrative authorities of these districts have not issued any order regarding the closure of schools and other educational institutions. Therefore, the schools of these regions will operate according to their daily routines.
