GATE Marking Scheme

GATE Marking Scheme has been released officially by the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee on the official website - gate2025.iitr.ac.in. Candidates can check the GATE exam marking scheme released by IITR. Candidates who are appearing for the GATE exam must know the marking scheme as it helps them to calculate their marks once the GATE Answer Key 2025 is released. IIT Roorkee will likely release the GATE 2025 answer key in the last week of February 2025. Once released, the GATE marking scheme can be used to calculate marks scored by candidates. For correct answers, candidates have to allot 1 & 2 marks, respectively. Similarly, for incorrect answers, one-third of the maximum marks must be deducted. Therefore, according to the GATE marking scheme, there is a negative marking of (-⅓) and (-⅔) for different questions, respectively.

GATE negative marking does not apply to incorrect answers to Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT). There is no partial marking in the Multiple Select Questions section.

Marking Scheme

Questions carry 1 or 2 marks

Negative Marking

For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be a negative marking.


For 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.


Likewise, For 2-mark MCQ, 2/3 mark will be deducted for a wrong answer.

No negative marking for Incorrect answers to MSQ or NAT questions.

No partial marking in any question type

GATE Marking Scheme 2025 - Negative Marking

There is a negative marking in GATE exam 2025 for Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs). MCQ questions are of two types which carry 1 mark and 2 marks, respectively. For incorrect answers, there is a one-third negative marking. Hence, for 1 mark question, there is a negative marking of ⅓ white it is ⅔ for 2-mark questions.

GATE 2025 Marking Scheme - Partial Marking

Many students are often confused about the concept of partial marking in Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. According to the official GATE information brochure, partial marking is not applicable to MCQs, MSQs, or NAT questions.
