The decision to set up the institute was taken by the Executive Council on June 11, 1999, and later approved by the University Court on September 16, 1999. As per the Burdwan University Act, UIT functions as a professional college managed by the university itself. With approval from the Government of West Bengal and AICTE, the institute offers Bachelor of Engineering programs in six disciplines.
UIT is accredited by TCS and maintains academic partnerships with global leaders like IBM, Oracle, and Microsoft. The National Board of Accreditation (NBA) has accredited its Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) and Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) departments. The institute was also selected for the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) Phase II, receiving funding from MHRD and the State Government in 2013.
The institute prides itself on a strong student-faculty ratio, with all faculty members holding postgraduate or PhD qualifications. Located about 100 km northwest of Kolkata, UIT’s campus lies near the Grand Trunk Road and Barddhaman Junction, ensuring easy access by road and rail.
