For decades, the role of science and mathematics teachers was largely to explain formulas, definitions, textbook concepts, conduct lab activities, and prepare students for exams. But in 2026, schools across India are no longer asking for what teachers used to offer. They’re searching for something fundamentally different. They want teachers who can weave together biology, physics, chemistry, and mathematics—and connect them all to coding, AI, and real-world problem-solving. The teaching jobs that once simply wanted a “Science Teacher” or “Maths Teacher” are increasingly seeking a “STEM Educator” or “STEM Coordinator.” 

This change is being driven by NEP 2020’s emphasis on experiential, inquiry-based, and interdisciplinary learning, CBSE’s introduction of coding and AI into the curriculum, and government initiatives such as NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission, which includes setting up 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in schools. 

But the pressure is not just coming from government mandates. Parents, too, are now asking schools how their children are being prepared for a future that is increasingly being shaped by coding, AI, technology, and critical thinking. 

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 highlights how almost 40% of skills required for jobs will change by 2030, highlighting the growing importance of future-ready skills, real-world application of concepts, problem-solving, and STEM learning. 

According to UDISE+ 2023-24 data released by the Ministry of Education, India has almost 98 lakh (9.8 million) teachers in almost 14.72 lakh schools. Most of these teachers have been trained through traditional pathways centred on subject-specific teaching. 

The result is a widening gap. Schools across India are rapidly moving toward interdisciplinary, application-based STEM learning, but thousands of teachers feel unprepared for this change. Their original training does not equip them for what students now need. 

For a maths or science teacher already in the classroom, the question is practical: How do I learn to teach this without spending two years back in college? 

Mr Vamshi Krishan, a Science teacher, faced exactly this question. He chose to upskill himself through live online sessions rather than feeling left behind and got certified as a STEM Educator. He began integrating IoT and robotics into classroom concepts. In one lesson, he used a Soil Moisture Detector to help students connect science with farming, sensors, technology, and real-world problem-solving.

Reflecting on his journey from a Science Teacher to a STEM Educator, Mr Vamshi shares: “Integrating STEM has completely changed how my students interact with concepts. They now see science in action, ask more questions, and think critically about real-world applications.” 

Another such inspiring educator is Mrs Pushpa Chaubey, who transformed Grade 9 mathematics by integrating line-following robotics, helping students apply geometry and equations to real-world navigation systems. 

Reflecting on her approach, Mrs Pushpa Chaubey shares: “STEM has made Maths more engaging for my students. They are no longer just solving equations on paper but applying them in real-world problem-solving. Seeing their excitement when their calculations successfully guide a robot is truly rewarding.” 

What binds Mr Vamshi and Mrs Chaubey is not just their professional courage. It’s how they didn’t abandon their subject expertise but expanded it by connecting it to technology, engineering, and real-world impact. 

“STEM Teacher Training covers a wide range of skills,” explains Mr Anil Gangadharan, who is a Certified STEM Teacher Trainer at upEducators. “Teachers develop expertise in interdisciplinary teaching techniques, design thinking and project-based methodologies. They also gain knowledge in AI, coding, robotics, IoT and simulation tools.” Mr Anil, who is also a DGCA Certified Drone Instructor and a Retired Indian Navy Flight Engineer, added that, “Most science and maths teachers already know their subject deeply. STEM training helps them connect their subject knowledge to real tools, real problems, and real outcomes”. 

Mr Ankush Bhandari, Founder of upEducators, a teacher training platform that has already trained over 1,00,000 educators, shares: “In the past few months, we’ve seen an overwhelming response to our Certified STEM Teachers Course. Our enrollments have doubled, and an increasing number of teachers are earning our STEM Educator certification by NASSCOM, accredited by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India. This reflects that science and mathematics teachers aren’t waiting for change—they’re actively seeking it to become future-ready educators.” 

This shift also reflects a deeper truth across Indian schools: the job that science and mathematics teachers were trained for has fundamentally changed. For thousands of educators across the country, the transition to STEM is no longer optional—it’s essential. And those who embrace this change will do more than stay relevant. They will shape the next generation of future-ready Indian classrooms with better career opportunities and higher earning potential.
