UGC NET 2025: Understand the Nature and Purpose of Exam
Starting the UGC NET preparation requires a structured approach to build a strong foundation in your chosen subject while mastering the paper’s two components: Paper 1 (general aptitude on teaching/research aptitude, comprehension, reasoning, and current affairs) and Paper 2 (subject-specific).
First and foremost, you need to understand the nature and purpose of the UGC NET examination. This examination is purely meant for academic and research-oriented careers. Broadly, there are three outcomes associated with this exam. One is a qualification for PhD admission only, the second is NET for Assistant Professor, and the third is NET with Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). So, essentially, the purpose of this examination is entirely academic and research-oriented.
UGC NET December 2025 Exam Structure
Now, coming to the structure of the examination, the UGC NET 2025 has two papers. The first one, which we usually call Paper I, is common for all subjects. It is a general paper that includes teaching aptitude, research aptitude, data interpretation, and other related areas, basically aptitude-based questions. This paper is extremely important, and you should not just aim to qualify it, but also perform well in it to secure a good overall score in the UGC NET examination.
The second paper is subject-specific and directly related to the subject you have opted for in the examination. Paper I contains 50 questions, each carrying two marks, making a total of 100 marks. Paper II consists of 100 questions, again two marks each, totaling 200 marks. So, the overall examination carries 300 marks.
UGC NET Exam Weekly Strategy
Now, the most important question is: what should be your strategy at this stage, when the examination is just a couple of weeks away?
The first and most important thing is that you must revisit or redo the previous years’ question papers, preferably at least the last 10 years. Solving previous years’ papers immediately puts you into examination mode. It helps you understand the nature of questions, the pattern, and the way questions are framed. At the same time, your mind automatically gets trained for the examination through this process.
The second important point, something many students often ignore, is that instead of approaching new topics in panic or trying to touch every possible topic at the last moment, you should focus only on key and specific areas. You will clearly identify these areas by solving previous years’ question papers and by understanding the important sections of your subject that are repeatedly asked in the NET examination.
UGC NET 2025 Revision Strategy: Final Stage of Preparation
At this stage, rather than hurriedly covering new things, it is much more important to revise the topics you have already studied so that you are confident about them. If you want to add anything new, then touch only those topics or aspects that are very relevant and frequently asked in the examination. You simply do not have the time now to cover everything.

Practice Mock Tests and PYQs to Build Confidence
The last important aspect in the UGC NET 2025 exam preparation is practice. You should attempt as many questions as possible through mock tests, previous papers, or practice sets available online or elsewhere. This continuous practice ensures that your brain remains in the examination mode and builds confidence.
If a candidate follows these basic strategies – understanding the nature of the examination, revising important topics, practising previous years’ papers, and attempting mock tests with the right mindset – it will significantly increase their chances of clearing the UGC NET examination. The UGC NET exam success is not about cramming endlessly; it is about smart, consistent preparation aligned with the exam’s demands.
