With rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, automation, robotics and smart manufacturing, engineering education is undergoing a fundamental shift, requiring institutions to focus increasingly on innovation and practical learning, according to Rahul Khandelwal, Assistant Professor at Hindustan Campus Mathura and Member Secretary of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC). Khandelwal, who is also associated with IITM Gwalior and is pursuing his PhD from BITS Pilani, believes that the future of engineering education lies in creating an ecosystem where students are encouraged to think beyond textbooks and develop solutions to real-world challenges.

“Industries today are looking for engineers who can innovate, adapt and contribute from day one. Academic knowledge remains important, but practical exposure and problem-solving capabilities have become equally critical,” he said. According to Khandelwal,  project-based learning, research activities and industry interactions are playing an increasingly important role in preparing students for emerging technologies and changing workplace requirements.

He noted that students must be exposed to contemporary domains such as artificial intelligence, automation and sustainable technologies to remain relevant in a highly competitive environment. He further emphasised that participation in hackathons, technical competitions and research forums helps students strengthen their technical capabilities while also fostering entrepreneurial thinking and leadership qualities.

“Engineering education today is no longer limited to obtaining a degree. It is about creating solutions and developing technologies that can contribute to society and the nation’s growth,” Khandelwal said. Industry experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between academia and business. Echoing this view,  Khandelwal said experiential learning and industry-aligned projects are essential for bridging the gap between classroom concepts and practical applications.

As  India continues to accelerate its ambitions in manufacturing, infrastructure and digital technologies, institutions promoting innovation, research and industry engagement are expected to play a significant role in building a future-ready workforce. Khandelwal believes that nurturing a culture of creativity and problem-solving among students will be key to shaping the next generation of engineers capable of driving India’s innovation-led growth story.

Rahul Khandelwal is an Assistant Professor at Hindustan Campus Mathura, Member Secretary of the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), associated with IITM Gwalior, and is currently pursuing his PhD from BITS Pilani.
